Founded in 2006 to continue to develop and strengthen Steve Charter’s respected expertise and extensive track record working in the sustainability field, SC2 is an independent consultancy focused on the practicalities of achieving personal, local and regional sustainability, through strategies and projects. With specialisms in sustainable construction, sustainable communities and sustainable lifestyles/sustainable living, as well as naturally healthy lifestyles. In recent years SC2 has developed particular expertise in sustainable construction skills projects: i) developing comprehensive sustainable buildings skills programmes (including construction, building services and other built environment professions, for the existing workforce and new entrants, covering short course / CPD, FE and HE levels) and ii) developing and refining proposals and business plans for sustainable construction skills centres. SC2 is also work with other partners on several proposals for Sustainable Enterprise Clusters (see below) - business parks catering for companies and organisations delivering services and products that advance and respond proactively sustainability and climate change objectives, including innovation hubs and training centres.
A particular strength is SC2’s holistic view and understanding of sustainability issues, from strategic to household levels, supported by a depth of experience arising from 15 years work in this field, in public, private, not-for-profit and education sectors, from grass-roots to national policy.
SC2 has been formed particularly to advance Foresight projects, which work with a multi-sector partnership (initially in Kent and Hampshire) to establish a strategic approach to delivering many aspects of sustainable development. Foresight seeks particularly to use flagship sustainable construction projects to strengthen learning and skills delivery, new enterprise and sustainable supply chain development, sustainable public procurement, sustainable product innovation and sustainable manufacturing capacity; projects include sustainable enterprise cluster with sustainable innovations lab, sustainable construction training, research and visitor centre, creative, knowledge and social enterprise clusters, ideally all integrated with large scale low carbon housing and mixed use sustainable communities development. In Kent the Foresight initiative has been the catalyst for several significant sustainable development projects, and has led the Kent Economic Board to establish a Kent Foresight Task Force (Sustainable Prosperity).
